Linguistic imperialism
Linguistic
imperialism refers to "the transfer of a dominant language to some
people" where this language has a superior dominance over others and is
then imposed in different cultural, social, educational, technological and
economic contexts. Many minority languages feel displaced.
Linguistic
imperialism could be seen as the military power of the modern as it not only
imposes its language but also many of its cultural customs.
English, for
example, has a significant impact on global communication, being used in
different areas and one of the most important is technology. English-speaking
countries have great influence, it is the most used language in networks and in
international trade. This has led many countries to adapt English as a second
language.
English has
therefore become an important requirement for communication but has generated a
debate as to whether it is a phenomenon of linguistic globalization or a type
of cultural imperialism due to the dominance of English in
global communication.
Despite the significant impact that linguistic imperialism has had on society, there is also concern about the loss of local languages and linguistic diversity.
Linguistic imperialism can be observed almost everywhere, from the instructions of the products we buy to the articles we read in important magazines, using English as a lingua franca brings many advantages especially when interacting with a large number of people, however, we must be aware that it also brings some disadvantages, dangers or inequalities that as a society we must take sides and advocate for new laws or proposals that minimize these inequalities.
